Tapioca, derived from the cassava plant (Manihot esculenta), is predominantly grown in tropical regions like Brazil, Thailand, and Nigeria. Cultivated in well-drained soil with sufficient rainfall, cassava plants are harvested when mature, typically around 8-24 months after planting.
After harvesting, the roots are processed to extract the starchy substance, which is then dried and milled into tapioca flour or pearls. Tapioca offers various health benefits, being naturally gluten-free and rich in carbohydrates, making it a source of quick energy.
Studies have also shown that tapioca may have prebiotic properties, promoting gut health by feeding beneficial bacteria in the digestive system.
At Origin Bakery, tapioca flour is a staple ingredient in many of our gluten-free products, however we use it moderately and choose to enhance our products with complimentary grains to enhance nutrition. The softness of tapioca is essential in one of our most sought after products, our carrot cake! Its binding properties and smooth texture contribute to the softness and structure of our baked goods, ensuring a delightful and satisfying eating experience for our customers.
